Gray Divorces

Although divorce rates have remained relatively low for most age groups over the past 20 years, there is one demographic where divorce rates have actually doubled—couples involved in long-term marriages. This phenomenon is commonly known as “gray divorce,” which refers to men and women who divorced after 40 years or more (i.e. baby boomers).

The following are common reasons why older couples have divorced at an alarming right over the past decade:

  • Grown apart. These spouses have grown apart over time. They may choose to start divorce proceedings when they have adult children or their last child goes off to college, or perhaps due to retirement.
  • Age. Sometimes, an older individual divorce their spouse for someone younger, thinking it will turn back the clock for them as well. The main idea is that if you’re around someone who acts old, then it can make you feel old—reminding you that you are only getting older.
  • Financial habits. Once forced to live on a fixed income or retirement, difference spending habits can make or break a marriage.
  • Sex. As we grow older, our sexual appetites may change, sometimes immensely. This can lead to frustration and the desire to ultimately file for divorce.
  • Self-improvement. Some people want to make changes to the way they are living their life, such as lose weight, improve their appearance, and be a better person overall. In order to do so, they need a spark of motivation to make the changes they desire, which can be in the form of divorce.
  • Regrets. Perhaps an individual married a person that he or she was “supposed to” and whom your parents approved of. However, it wasn’t the person he or she wanted to marry.

If you are seeking a divorce later in life, the fact is that the longer a couple is married, the more complex the issues regarding their divorce will be. Gray divorces often involve a large amount of assets, so it is wise to speak with a qualified attorney who is experienced in handling these type of divorces. At Wakenight & Associates, P.C., we are committed to helping older couples obtain a divorce outcome that is fair, cost-effective, and timely.
